A gorgeously attired dancer and musicians, who have been summoned by Queen Sivali to distract the king from his resolve.
This story is depicted in 1500 year old caves in Ajanta. This complete orchestra and dancer are all women.
There are playing flutes, cymbals, drums (dhol) etc. all these musical instruments, practically unchanged, remain in use in India. The painting closely follows the directions laid down in the ancient Indian treaties of painting. Dance is bedecked with large verity of ornaments like thumb ring, ear rings, pearl strings, strings of flowers in hair, ornaments of the head.
The pose caught of the dancer is most interesting and still used in Indian dance movements today, and serves to show that these traditions were already well established more than 1500 years ago.
